Different approaches to handling by-products in the maize and willow scenarios. In the maize scenario, digestate as a by-product was circulated within the system. In willow scenario a, which was the default scenario, biochar was circulated within the system and by-product heat was exported from the system. In willow scenario b, emission reductions were studied by assuming that the by-products of willow scenario (i.e., biochar and heat) substituted their fossil alternatives
